What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium inserts that take the place of tooth roots. They are firmly fixed into the jawbone on which a fixed or removable false tooth [prosthesis] can be attached to look and function like a natural tooth.

Are you a Candidate for a modern dental solution?

– Are you ignoring missing teeth?
As a result of teeth missing in your mouth oral health complications could jeopardize your remaining natural healthy teeth.
If you are missing one or multiple teeth, then you may be a candidate for dental implants.

– Do you suffer from Headaches or migraines?
Missing teeth may affect the position of remaining natural teeth which may cause a misfit of the upper and lower jaw resulting in stiffness of the muscles and joints. Often restoring missing teeth may provide relief of these symptoms.

– Do you wear dentures?
Denture use is usually accompanied by embarrassing situations, pain and ill fitting false teeth along with bone resorption. Implants are a good option since they provide good stability and comfort, they act like your own natural tooth and can support dental crowns which look and feel like real teeth.

– Has your Facial silhouette changed?
Loss of teeth is accompanied with a loss of bone density, causing the jaw line to shrink and change making you look older than you really are.

Advantages of Implants:

  1.  No need of removable dentures.

  2.  No need to grind natural adjacent teeth for fabrication of bridges.

  3.  Implants are biocompatible.

  4.  With proper care and oral hygiene, implants usually last a lifetime.

  5.  Implants provide stability and comfort.

  6.  Eliminate the need for adjustment once placed.

  7.   Stimulate natural bone minimizing further bone loss.

The Implant Procedure:

Treatment with implants is a two stage procedure:

Stage one:

– This is a small surgical procedure, simpler than an extraction where the implants are placed in the jaw bone and few stitches are placed.
–  These stitches are removed a week later.

Stage two:

–  After a minimum of 2 months, the healing is analysed to check for integration.
–  The implants are exposed.
–   Either impressions are made and sent to the lab to fabricate a crown or CEREC CAD-CAM 3D camera is used for scanning the implant which further mills out a crown.
–   The fabricated crown or the milled CEREC CAD-CAM crown is placed in the mouth.

Dental implant solutions with modern dental Technology can be used for:

1.       Single tooth replacement

– Individually made ceramic crowns look and feel like natural teeth.

2. Multiple tooth replacement

– A Bridge supported on implants.

3.      Full mouth replacement of teeth

A.      With Removable implant overdenture:

–  Cost effective option.
–  New teeth are attached to 2 or more dental implants.
–  The prosthesis is removable.
–  Easy to clean and maintain.
–  The need for denture adhesive is eliminated.

B.    With Fixed implant supported bridges:

– More durable solution
– The prosthesis is secured on 4 or more dental implants.
– It is not removable from the oral cavity.
– This solution stimulates bone, restores chewing function and maintains taste sensation.

Post implant instructions:

1] Anesthesia: The feeling of numbness will begin to wear off in 30 minutes to 4 hours. Until that time, avoid all hot foods or liquids, and do not eat anything.

2] Cotton Pack: A folded cotton pack has been placed over the surgical site. There should be firm pressure on the surgical site to assist in halting the bleeding. Maintain firm biting pressure on the cotton pack for one hour.

3] Bleeding: It is normal for the extraction site to bleed slightly or ooze blood for 12 to 24 hours following surgery. Saliva tinged with blood is normal for 1-2 days.

4] Ice Pack: For the first 2-8 hours after surgery, ice packs should be applied intermittently to the outside of the face over the area of surgery. The ice pack should be held in place for 15 minutes or so, and then removed for 15 minutes. This will help reduce discomfort and swelling.

5] Diet: A cold and soft diet should be adhered to for the first 12-24 hours. It is important to drink plenty of liquids for the first day or two following surgery. Avoid the use of a straw as it may dislodge the blood clot that is forming in the extraction site.

6] Oral Hygiene: Clean the rest of your mouth as usual, however avoid bumping or brushing the surgical site. DO NOT GARGLE for the first 24 hours following surgery

7] Medication: Some pain and swelling after the surgery is normal. If prescription medications were prescribed please use them and follow the instructions carefully. DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN PRODUCTS due to the possible increase in bleeding potential.

8] Precautions: Avoid touching and feeling the surgical site with your fingers and tongue. DO NOT SMOKE for the first 24 hours following surgery. Avoid spitting for 24 hours. Please swallow your spittle.

9] Check Up: A check up the next day after surgery is recommended. Any sutures placed are non resorbable and need to be cut one week after the surgery.
